I always have more to say, here’s as much as Scottie let me put on our blog!

One of our favorite photos sessions with one of our favorite families!

When some of our best friends moved away from Phoenix to Sierra Vista, we were more than bummed.

But we quickly realized that having friends who live in a town that stays below 100 degrees, has it’s benefits!  Our positive perspective was confirmed when Ryan called us to help him give Molly a surprise family photo session for mothers day.

We headed down for a weekend of intense late night conversations, tasty meals, hilarious kids, and major life revelations (which is what always happens when we hang out with this family!).

Molly and Ryan had a terrific weekend planned for us.  We started out by heading down to the little town of Bisbee, AZ.

We’d never been there before and we found out that this little European-esque place in the middle of the Desert that is Arizona, is a photographers dream!

(They love baseball!)

It was really hard for us to adjust to walking right past places we could only dream of finding to use as photo backgrounds if we were in Phoenix because there were just too many good shots and we would’ve had to be shooting for a week straight to catch it all!

We also headed down to their favorite little hiking area, Ramsey Canyon, to catch them doing one of the many things they enjoy doing together as a family.

Our big outdoor adventure was followed by a nice dinner at a cute little 50′s diner…

…and then a night of their normal bedtime routines.  Their bedtime routine is one of my favorite things about being with this family.  First, dad gives them a bath time, complete with special treats that the kids absolutely love like tornado time (watching the water go down the drain fast), airplane time (dad tossing them up in the air to help dry them off), and great conversation about life.

The kids all have their toothbrushes in a row and they each brush their teeth while dad dries their brothers off, then they head into their bedroom to wait for the family to finish gathering in there.

Once they are all in the room, they have Bible story time, followed by question and answers (I couldn’t believe the intelligent questions they kids ask!).  They all do “blessings” on each other which is where they each go up to every family member (and Scottie and I) and run their finger over your face in the shape of a cross saying “in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.”  Have you ever heard a 3 year old saying something that intense while looking at you straight in the eye?  It’s so cool!  Especially when he says “fodder” instead of father.;-)

Next they all climb into bed, sing a hymn together, and say prayers.  They really do this together every night! Before they moved, Molly and Ryan were in the class we took that helped us get out of debt (read our blog about that here) so we went over to their house once a week around bedtime and got to witness this routine every time.  So awesome.

Despite how neat all of that was to watch, I have to say that my favorite part was when the 4 year old was laying down to sleep and just before we walked out of the room, he innocently decided to ask one last quick question, “how do we get babies?”.

Oh wow, it took us a long time be able to catch our breathes from laughing after we walked out of that room!  Luckily, we caught that one on video!  Which by the way, we plan on releasing for you all to see soon!

The next day we headed over to the superhero wall.

Superhero mom, Molly, had made all the boys capes with their initials on it and masks go with it.

Oh wow, it couldn’t have been more perfect for pictures!

We just sat around for awhile watching the boys fight crime and then play on the playground afterwards.

These are definitely some of my favorite pictures of all time!!!

Let me just say that you have truly never seen 3 little boys who are so well behaved before.

(These are some little hats that I, Breanna, bought at Michaels and have been saving for the perfect kids photo session… this was it, they loved the hats!)

I spent most of the weekend trying to convince Molly and Ryan to start a blog or write a book because they must have something magic up their sleeve!

They are a very exceptional family who permeate one another’s lives with love, grace, acceptance, and humility.  Even the little 3 year old extends these values to his other family members!

It was seriously moving to wake up every morning and get to watch another day of a family loving one another that well!

I say all of this because the entire weekend was filled with activity and the kids were totally thrown off their normal schedule…

…and still we did not see one time when it was necessary to discipline the children.  They were just good the entire time… exhaustion and excitement weren’t even enough to bring these amazing kids down!

Molly bought bribery candy for our day in Bisbee and by the end of the day, the grown ups ended up eating it because it was not even necessary to bring out even once!  Unbelievable!  We are so proud to be friends with people who can raise such beautiful, wonderful, sweet, and caring children.

We’re also so thankful we got to meet them before we have our own kids so that maybe we can learn a few of their secrets in time to apply them ourselves!

By the way, when we asked them about their kid raising magic tricks they said the main ingredient is that everyone serves one another… parents serving each other included!

Their explanation totally did make sense after we’d been watching them for an entire weekend.  Molly and Ryan weren’t constantly begging each other to take over with the kids, because one would always hop up first without even a second thought, and we didn’t hear any arguments the entire time over “who’s job it is”.

Molly and Ryan really do serve one another better than I think I’ve ever seen any couple do… and the kids have followed suite.

(Spending the afternoon playing baseball with their kids)

(Molly & Ryan love the “Swagger Wagon” song and this is their homage to it!  If you haven’t seen this hilarious video, you’re missing out so click here!)

How many times have you seen a little 6 year old willingly serving his 4 year old rather than fighting for their own individual rights?  Well, we saw it constantly all weekend!

(The littlest one loves helping his mom cook for the family.  While prepping for this same meal, the middle child is asking if he can be our waiter which means setting the table and bringing us our food).

In fact, Scottie and I saw this family serving each other enough all weekend that when we got home,  we looked at each other and realized that if we don’t start learning to serve one another better, then we’re in trouble when we have kids because they’ll definitely learn more than a few bad habits from watching us.  So thanks to this freaking cool family, our new goal in life is to learn to love others better by working on things about ourselves (the main thing having to do with serving others).

Thank you guys so much for being one of the most positive influences in our entire life.  I can’t even begin to communicate how refreshed, hopeful, excited, etc., etc. we felt after spending a weekend being served by you.  We’ve decided to have Ellison weekend at least 3 times a year because it’s one of the best things we could do to help us become better people…and because we have a GREAT time!!

We love you all!

Kristine and Aaron’s chill, downtown wedding

If you have been following our blog for long, you probably remember a ridiculously good looking couple named Kristine and Aaron (check out their engagement session blog if that isn’t jogging your memory).  Well the time finally came to see how these people could rock it on their wedding day… and rock it they did!

Both of them looked their best (which is better than most of us could even dream of!) and just like in their engagement session, they both adopted that trademark chill attitude that makes them the epitome of a cool couple.

Of course you could expect nothing less but for them to have super cool friends as well… and they did not disappoint!

We had a lot of fun hanging out with all the bridal party and capturing all the photos of them inside…

(The God is Love sign above their heads is perfection!)

…and outside…

(Fan us on Facebook so you can tag yourselves in some of these photos!)

…but mostly inside because it’s sweaty summertime in Phoenix!

Luckily the old church that they got married in was really cool both inside and outside!

After their official reveal moment…

…we had to get some pictures of the outside of the church because it’s more than just a REALLY cool building…

…it’s also the church that Kristine’s dad is the pastor of.

So he decided to brave the potential emotional breakdown…

…to officiate his daughter’s wedding ceremony.

He made a great decision in my opinion because the ceremony was beautiful!

(They practiced their dip during their engagement session and they had it nailed by the time the ceremony came around!)

I can’t let this blog go by without giving major props to Kristine and Aaron for braving the heat and being troopers for picture time out in it!

We wandered around Roosevelt row in Downtown Phoenix to get some shots in front of the unique fixtures that make the Phoenix art walk (First Fridays) as exciting as it is!

(Once again, good thing they perfected their mad dip skillz!)

Thanks Kristine and Aaron, for letting us drag you around in your wedding clothes, in the heat, and through a not-so-clean part of town (especially since it was the day after the art walk!).

(I, Breanna, think this pic is probably my favorite from the day.  As Scottie would say, “I killed this one”. Ha ha)

I have to say that I was impressed by how adventurous you were… I never once saw that look that brides sometimes give me that says “please Breanna, tell Scottie I am SO not willing to do that” and I was fully expecting it this time around!;-)

I think the trek through dirty downtown was worth it because I absolutely love the pictures we got down there!

Of course I can only say that because thankfully Kristine’s white dress came through the trash and debris unscathed!

After picture adventure hour was over, we had a nice drive to get some time to cool off before the reception.  But that great A/C wasn’t strong enough to pull everyone through the insane dancing that quickly ensued once we arrived!

(This is a great “we have arrived” picture!)

I’ll start by explaining one of my all time favorite wedding dances.  It all started with a regular father/daughter dance, but it ended in a crazy full on Broadway style production!  Kristine’s other already married sisters joined them on a dance floor for a spectacular choreographed dance involving several songs, props, and one very fun family!

I can’t even begin to explain it other than to say that it was absolutely spectacular!  It was also very complicated with lots of details and they pulled it off without a hitch!  Great job guys, that was quite a memorable father/daughter dance!

The rest of the party kept up with the same kind of great energy…

…which is so fun to take pictures of!

Thanks Kristine and Aaron for being so easy to work with (aka chill) and for inviting us to such an awesome party!!

We had a great time, so I can’t imagine how much fun all your guests must have had!!

I’d say the entire day was a huge success.  Congratulations!

Diana and Hector’s musical and poetic engagement session

It only took about half a second after we explained how we do “creative” engagement sessions, for Diana and Hector to know exactly what they wanted.

There are two things that were integral in bringing them together… music…

…and poetry…

…so they knew that having a session centered on those two things was a must!

We started out by checking out the poetry and music at a bookstore.

They got to flip through their favorite books and albums, while enjoying their day together… while we just happened to be taking pictures the whole time!

OK, we did bother them enough to grab a few poses in the bookstore!

When we left the bookstore, we took some time to get a few photos of them flipping through their CD’s.

They said that when they thought about what they do together… sitting in the car, deciding what CD to play consumes a lot of their time!  So of course we couldn’t miss that special moment!:-)

Next we moved onto Mesa Arts Center where we took a few more standard engagement session type of shots.

We also took a minute while we were there for them to read each other poems they had picked out just for the session!

Such a cool idea on their part!

Once we felt like we had what we needed from the arts center, we moved on to one of our favorite walls… the music wall!

When I heard they wanted a session centered around music, this wall was the first thing that popped into my head.

Diana and Hector…

…thank you both so much for putting the energy into planning a creative session… it was a ton of fun for us!

We hope you love the resulting product from your engagement session imaginations!

Danine’s Urban Outfitters Senior Session

At my very first glimpse of Danine, I knew I liked her.

… even though the first time I saw her it was just on Facebook!

How could I not like her, she was gushing over the senior photos we’d taken of one of her friends.  Anyone who loves what we do that much, is a friend in my book!;-)

Danine couldn’t get over how much her friend’s pics looked like an Urban Outfitters catalog, which is awesome considering that is a catalog we subscribe to for inspiration and that we love some of the work we see in there!

She contacted us for her own session shortly after publicly raving about us to the world via Facebook, and of course we were more than excited to do a session for her!

Someone who really understands and appreciates our style the way she does… is someone we’re dying to work with! So we set out to plan her own senior session with an Urban Outfitters feel to it!

The more I got to know Danine the more I felt like I (Breanna) not only understood her style, but really clicked with her on a personal level.

Whenever there’s that kind of artistic connection with a client, I feel a lot more free to be myself in my processing of the photos… and I love that!

Of course, this time was no different… I had so much fun working on Danine’s pictures!

The processing wasn’t the only fun part in all of this, actually working with Danine was the best!  Talk about a bubbly, fun, confident girl!

It’s awesome to see someone who has “success” written all over them, getting ready to head off to college!

(She’s going to the University of Arizona if you can’t tell by the U of A shirt she’s wearing in a bunch of the pictures!)

Thanks Danine, for being a joy to work with and for appreciating our work so much!  Good luck with all your future endeavors!

Stacia and Mike’s wedding with style

If you spend X amount of hours watching TLC wedding shows, plus another X amount of hours reading wedding magazines, and you want your wedding to equal Y amount of uniqueness, how do you make that happen when you feel like everything’s already been done?  Well if you really want an answer to this question, I think you should ask Stacia and Mike.

However I don’t think their answer will help you much because really it has everything to do with their sense of style and it’s something that just can’t be taught.

If you’re like me, you’ve met people in your life that make you say “wow, I wish I could pull things off like them”.  Well Stacia and Mike are those people… everything they touch turns to cool.

So you take all that cool…

…add in a gorgeous venue

… a really fun bridal party…

(Fan us on Facebook to tag yourself in some of these photos!)

….a freaking beautiful bride…

(right before he saw her for the first time).

…a studly groom…

(Right after he saw her for the first time).

…and the cutest kid you’ve ever seen…

…you have Stacia and Mike’s wedding (I’ll spare the word problem analogy for this one… no x’s and y’s to confuse us all).

Seriously, you couldn’t find a better threesome anywhere!  And lucky us, we get to be the ones who have the job of communicating who they are to the world!  I hate to brag, but we have such a fun job!  And people like this remind us of that constantly!

So now if you’re wondering about all this coolness that I speak of, try this on for size…

His ring is from Russel Simmons’ jewelry collection…

Everyone in the bridal party wore Converse…

(and Stacia’s polka dot socks definitely topped it off!)

Their lighting and draping was unbelievable (talk to Carrie at Stonecreek Golf Club for details on that and then talk to her about everything else in the world because she’s fun to talk to!)…

And there’s just some things about them that must have been sprinkled with magical cool glitter because you just can’t explain it.  Like, how do you say “cool” with just your mere stance and presence in a room?  I don’t know, but both Stacia and Mike have that down.

(Even during a time when most people would look ridiculous… um, guess what… Mike still looks cool!! I don’t know anyone else who can pull of a frosting glob like that.)

Alright I’m swearing off the word “cool” for the rest of this blog… more like for the rest of this week!  I’ll go for some other adjectives to describe them.  How about… “happy”?!

Yeah, that one works.

I’d say that’s a pretty good description considering their faces in so many of these pictures!

When you see so many photos of two people looking so happy on their wedding day, I think you can safely call the day a success! Thanks Stacia and Mike for letting us be a part of your awesome (like my substitute for the “C” word there?) wedding.

We seriously loved getting to hang out with you, you’re both so much fun to be around.  Thanks for being so considerate of us on a day that was supposed to be all about you.  You made us feel like we were taking pictures at a friends wedding and hanging out at the same time.  We loved it.  The best to you both!
